Buying a PC monitor: what to check before comparing prices
Start with the computer and desk you already use. A useful monitor shortlist describes a complete screen, how it will connect and what you need to see on it. This guide helps you build those requirements and compare the same configuration across listings; it is not a tested-product ranking.
1. Separate a complete monitor from a part
Write “complete PC monitor for my computer” if that is what you need. A replacement LCD panel, controller board, stand, dock or cable is a different purchase. Check both the listing description and the selected option: a photograph of a working screen does not describe every variant offered on the page.
Before comparing prices, record what comes in the box. Is the stand included? Is there a power supply? Which video cable is included, if any? A low-priced accessory option should not be compared with a complete monitor.
2. Describe your workspace and task
Measure the available desk width and depth, then check the monitor’s dimensions with its stand. Diagonal screen size alone does not tell you whether its base fits. If you intend to use an arm, check the monitor’s mounting specification and the arm’s stated size and weight limits.
Write down your main task: reading documents, arranging several windows, playing games or working with images. Compare resolution, refresh rate and adjustable height against that task. If you require a particular color specification, ask for a specification or measurement for the exact model rather than inferring it from a colorful listing image.
3. Check the entire connection path
List the computer’s output, any dock or adapter, the cable and the monitor’s input. Confirm the desired resolution and refresh rate for that combination in the manufacturers’ documentation. An available connector is a starting point, not confirmation of every display mode.
For USB-C, check video support explicitly. Dell’s troubleshooting guidance for its portable monitors calls for a computer port supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode. Read the documentation for your own computer and monitor; do not assume a matching USB-C shape establishes video support. If you also want laptop charging, check the monitor’s stated power delivery and your laptop’s charging requirements separately.
4. Turn the checks into a search
An example brief is: “Complete PC monitor for document work, fits a 60 cm-wide space, HDMI input, height-adjustable stand included.” Replace these example conditions with your measurements.
